Welcome to the second episode of the Writing Tip Wednesday Series! This week's tip is all about student writing goals.
You may have noticed your students can be a bit unfocused when it comes to independent writing time. This is where student writing goals come in. By setting individual writing goals for your students, you can help them know exactly what to do when they are practicing your writing.
Setting writing goals is much like planning a mini lesson - there should only be one thing that students are focused on. Start small and think about the things a specific student needs to work on. Then look at that list and determine which item they should start with. Maybe if they are having trouble writing sentences they need capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between their words. I would pick one of these - maybe capital letters - to start with. Once I see they have mastered this goal then I would pick the next item.
