Are you stuck doing these writing strategies just Are you stuck doing these writing strategies just because you see everyone else doing it?

1. Daily writing prompts: They are great once in awhile but they shouldn't be your writing curriculum all year.

2. Assigning writing without a lesson: Students need explicit lessons, not just being told what to write.

3. Whole class assignments: Giving every student, the exact same prompt or assignment is going to ignore their interest in their skill level and this will lead to lots of problems during independent practice time.

4. Grammar focused: By prioritizing correct punctuation and spelling before students have developed their ideas stifles their creativity and prevents them from wanting to take risks.

5. Quiet work time: students should not be quiet when they're trying to write. They need to be talking, discussing and sounding out their words.

6. Correcting student work: Correcting student work for them, rather than teaching them how to revise and edit their own work is going to lead to lack of Independence and less ownership of their own writing.

7. Final draft perfection: Spending too long polishing up one piece puts the emphasis on the result rather than the process.

8. Starting with paragraphs: Students need explicit and systematic instruction starting with the basics before you can launch into the end goal.

Hi, I’m Susan and I'd love to be your writing coach!

I love to write stories, but writing for myself is very different than teaching students to write. After a lot of trial and error, I finally became a confident writing teacher. I know it’s also possible for you.
