Model Your Story: Writing Tip Wednesday Series

Welcome to the sixth episode of the Writing Tip Wednesday series! This week’s tip is all about how to model your story when teaching personal narratives.

When teaching writing in elementary, knowing how to model your story in front of students is an essential skill. We want to engage our students in the lesson but we al20 need to model the skills we are expecting them to learn. It can be a challenging to make sure we are doing both.

First, figure out what you want them to learn. Pick one thing. In this episode, our one thing will be a sense of story (beginning, middle, and end). Next, choose the story you want to model. I like to use a true story from my life and I pick something that students can relate to.

One story I tell every year is about a time I got hurt. All students can relate to getting hurt!  After I model my story, they are eager to tell their own - this is the whole point of the mini lesson! Get them excited to tell their story on paper.
